Endangered Used Car: Isuzu VehiCROSS

This is part of a new series here on the used car blog, where we talk about interesting used cars that may soon be endangered.

The Isuzu VehiCROSS was created from 1999-2001 at the tail-end of the SUV boom. Every company had a similar boxy body-on-frame SUV at the time, and so some attempts were made to make something more unique. The Isuzu VehiCROSS was definitely that.

It was a two-door compact, but still had fairly large, trail-ready proportions. The VehiCROSS was well regarded for it’s off-road capabilities, despite it’s overstyled look. Not only that, it was not bad on-road, with many luxury options and AWD for normal every day driving. A locking differential 4-wheel drive made it almost unstoppable off-road. Equipped with a 215-hp 6-cyl engine, it also has plenty of pickup for it’s size.

The styling is definitely “love it or hate it”, which is partly why it was discontinued after only 3 years on the market.

These vehicle were rare even when new, with only ~4,000 being sold in the USA, they are extremely difficult to find on the second hand market which is why we are considering them endangered. There are none currently available on Used Cars On-Line, and I could only find one on major market searches of Craigslist.

If you can find one of these, we definitely recommend picking one up. According to the consumer reviews we could find, this car is pretty reliable so those that have survived accidents are probably still running and worth an investment. If you are really lucky you can get the extremely rare “Ironman” edition, which is only available in white and has the Ironman logo on the seats.
